are my chilis and peppers dying
« on: July 02, 2010, 21:11 »
been at work the last couple of days and left my plants on the balcony fed and watered them on wednesday they were looking really nice, just checked them now and they look as if they are dying shrivelled leaves with tinges of yellow.
have they been exposed to too much heat? what should i do to save them? they look bone dry again

Mine were looking like this however they were in need of potting on - tonight after re potting a good drink they've perked up no end I think they get very hot in the green house even with the front open

Good luck

I must pot mine on too.  I remember last year or the one before on Gardeners' World they mentioned potting on peppers several times.  It's  a bit of a chore though - especially as mine have sent their roots down into the capillary matting :)  Not sure whether prising them off would be detrimental?

Be careful, in my experience peppers dont like to much root disturbance.

How do you know when you've reached the optimal size pot?
Does it depend on variety?
Most of this year's peppers and chilies are in 6" pots and some have roots beginning to escape,  but my 2 year old chili is in the same size pot and is fruiting furiously (30+ at the moment plus another 15 flowers open) and has no roots showing (the leaves are very small though).

I was once told that chillis thrive on a bit of pot bound stress- so dont like potting on too much.
Also that if they are a bit 'under potted' and under watered you tend to get hotter chilis!

Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

Thanks to some advice on here, I let mine go "flacid" before they get watered.  Got 15 nearly ripe chillis already!  I have 2 plants which are 14" high and they are still in 3" pots on the window sill so definitely need potting on now.
