Strawberries grown in gutters?
« on: June 16, 2010, 13:10 »
I'm running out of room on our allotment, so could do with some space saving ideas for the strawberries.

I was planning to make a strawberry pyramid out of wood. But i read somewhere that they are a bit of a pain to water - bottom plants get too much water and top not enough. Has anyone made one?

My other idea was growing them in gutters. But i'm not sure if i can do that. I dont know if they are too shallow for the roots etc

Any ideas?

Also, my plants are already in the ground and are fruiting, can i move them now?

We have just netted our unused gazebo frame against pigeons and butterflies and planted up with a variety of brassicas.  I wondered whether next year if it would be possible to grow strawberries on benches about 3 foot off the ground, and positioned so that they don't shade the brassicas, in growbags or something similar.  The frame is 10 foot square and the space above the brassicas seems an awful waste.

Also saw on gardeners world, peas started in guttering in the greenhouse then slid from the gutter into trench without disturbing the roots.

Any hints? Our allotment is in the Best Newcomer in 2 weeks, so need to sort it as soon as we can.

Please have a bit more patience cjskts; Aelf has promised a reply and no doubt others will contribute if they can!  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Deep Flow guttering would have a bit more room for the roots but it may be a bit too wet in winter even with lots of drainage holes.
