can i grow onions in shallow gutters?

i have an abundance of shallow flat bottom gutters i use them for seed trays and want to know what plants will grow in them?  think i could grow onions in them?

I put some sprouting onion sets into a seed tray full of compost to develop the roots prior to planting them out and there was just enough room for their roots after about 2 weeks.  Any longer I think they would have been climbing out. But you could maybe use them as green onions rather than growing them on to full size.
