Peas are the bane of my life
« on: June 06, 2010, 19:00 »
For then second year running my Peas germination has been abysmal.
I sowed 300 Kelvedon Wonder directly in to the soil about 4 weeks ago and I have only got 18 small plants through.out of three hundred!!!!!!!!!! So I have purchased another packet of 300 today and sown those with crossed fingers.

Annoyingly is that the old timer 2 plots down from me just sows the cheapest Asda basics marrowfat peas and each year he gets a bumper crop. All he does in make a small trench throws  the seeds in covers them,  waters if its dry and leaves then to it with a bit of chicken wire to protect the seedlings from the flying rats (I also protect my seedlings in a similar way).
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

I planted 3 varieties, kelvedon wonder, early onward and cavalier.  The others are fine, but my kelevdon wonders have had a very poor germination rate.  Mine were from T&M, what about you?

My first planting failed to germinate also...a pathetic failure rate. 3 seedlings out of about 500 planted.

I replanted Ambassador (purchased from T&M and I FINALLY have shoots showing in my pea rows but what a scramble.

Thank you for reminding me to protect them. After no problem last year the birds have been very naughty in my garden and really went after my young brassicas last week.

I'll be keeping my fingers and hoping for better luck coming your way.

There are three allotment growers close by who have, like me, seen poor germination from using kelvedon wonder seeds.I wonder if there is a trend emerging here? Be interested to hear from anyone else who have had similar results.

BTW - I believe DD is not growing peas this year, does he know something we do not  ::)

I also sowed kelvedon wonder. Only about a third of them have come through.
Time for a purchase of a couple of different veriety's to edge my bets.

The circumstances are unique to me, no insider information! The peas I'm not sowing are self-saved heritage one that I can't replace.

KW were my No. 1 pea, though.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've also had poor results from Kelvedon Wonder. They' all germinated, but only grew a few inches tall, and out of a row of 20 only a couple have flowered so far. They're so short & stubby, the pea, if it ever forms, will trail on the ground.

By contrast, peas sown from a large packet purchased from a local Pound Shop (variety Greenshaft) have been great.

I've also had rubbish germination from KWs - self saved from 2009.

I am now praying very hard that I planted amassadors last week (after a disappointment with some seedlings I ordered from ebay, planted whatever seeds I bought direct).  I think I will be buying a spare packet this week.
