warning!!! Frost
« on: May 10, 2010, 17:57 »
The BBC weather forecast for the North and Midlands predicts FROST for early morning tomorrow and Wednesday.  So better get those spuds earthed up again and again , and again.  When will this pain end? and I am almost out of soil to put on them. >:(

You may have already spotted my post on strawberries and frost, but on there I posted a link to a website which I use regularly and find very reliable:

I've just been and earthed mine up, I too had run out of soil so I have just thrown loads of sacks of used compost that came out of last years pots and hanging baskets over the top of them.  Looks like some of them have got some frost damage already though.

The temperatures given in forecasts are for a height of 1.5m above the ground.

At ground level it can be 2 or 3 degrees lower.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

We have already lost our courgettes to frost.   >:(

Fortunately the loss is not too great as we only had 3 plants.  We learnt our lesson last year (our first year) and realised that 9 courgette plants was a tad too many unless you wanted to become a courgette farmer.   :nowink:

I have earthed up the potatoes and fleeced the strawberries.  Do I need to cover anything else.  I have carrots, broad beans, garlic, shallots, onions and peas in.  Plus blueberries, rosemary, sage, thyme and mint in pots.
Also my morello cherry is blossoming, I am not worried about cherries this year but do not want the tree to die, I was planted in a pot about a month ago, will this need protecting?

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give  :)

I've just been out and moved the tubs of potatoes back into the greenhouse! I've earthed up the potatoes bt still left a couple of leaves out at the top - should I cover them completely?

Spuds earthed up and covered other stuff with cloches, bubble wrap etc done what I can but there is too much growing to cover it all so it's down to luck and good fortune from now on. It's 9pm now still cloudy and above freezing, here's hoping it lasts 'til morning.

Peas will be fine

Gets up grabs a spade and drives to the lotty. Earthed up spuds and back in the arm chair with a glass of wine by 9.30pm. Phew that was close. Was going to chance it till I saw this post  :D
