My orpingtons lay most days but today I found an egg that one of them had laid without a shell. The egg was intact inside its membrane but no shell at all. They have layers pellets, mixed corn and lots of vegatation so I'm a litlle mystified. Is there a reason for this?

Hi Tania, my orp bantam did the same last week for the first time but she is now back to normal. My birds have been unsettled with the drastic weather changes but today they are all back to normal. Just keep an eye on her, it is probably a one off.

Do they have access to oyster grit?

Yes there is always Oyster grit out for them. Mind you, they'd rather be munching my veggie plot at the moment!! lol

mine do the same thing from time to time, it occurs when the egg bipasses the isthmus in the ovary duct and doesn't get the shell put on, it doesn't have anything to do with not getting enough calcium. it usualy occurs more frequently in older hens
you'll know when hens aren't getting enough calcium because the egg shell will feel like porcelin
