Another compost question sorry
« on: April 15, 2010, 12:57 »
I just boiled some eggs for sarnies and was wondering am I ok to put the shells in the compost as they have been boiled and have that skin from between the egg and the shell on them? I am being over cautious I'm sure just don't want to atract unwanted pests to the allotment lol.

Many thanks Nicky

Don't think a bit of membrane stuck to an egg shell would count as a meal for a rat!

Lots of people add eggshell to their compost but they don't actually rot down in the normal sense of the word because they are 96% calcium carbonate (chalk) and hence have virtually no organic content. Can help prevent the compost getting too acidic though and ditto for the garden when you eventually use it.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I throw both fresh and cooked shells into my compost. Best if you crush them up first so they'll break down faster.

You could bake them at 180c for about 20 mins. and then crush them up and put hem around any tender plants like lupins or deliphinimums, the slugs hate cooked shells!

I wash them as I've had a rat in my bin, and I don't want it back again  :D  They really add to the grittiness of the finished compost so is bad news for slugs  :)
