peas and beans advice
« on: April 14, 2010, 16:21 »
i was given some beans and told they were broad beans not sure if they are or not never really seen bean seeds before, and ive bought some peas. i was gowing to dig a bean trench and make a munty frame for the beans but i read on another thread that braod beans dont need a munty frame. so the question is what do people use for broad beans to grow up? and do they need a bean trench? and same questions for peas. thanks massa.

and the answer is the same as that given on the other thread
It is not usual to dig trenches for broad beans or peas.
Broad beans are self supporting and here is the link for the pea supports

I usually put a few sticks in and tie some string round the broad beans if they get a bit tall, specially as they get heavily podded the wind can blow them over.
As the great Percy Thrower used to say
" OI THINK THE ANSWER LIES IN THE SOIL"

I've just checked in my copy of The Essential Allotment Guide, and it says in windy areas you may need to support them as you do for peas.........but this is something I've never done :D

For broad beans, I use clematis netting on the windiest side and to stop them flopping over the edge of my raised beds. Twine that doesn't stretch or plastic-coated wire is useful on the other side. They produce more growth stems around the base so it is difficult to tie them all in individually.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I've supported mine before  (taller varieties) with a similar arrangement to DD's famous pea supports - I just used corner posts and wound twine round them at different heights .  It worked a treat and kept them nice and neat.

Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....
