introducing a new chicken
« on: March 19, 2010, 20:11 »
Hi,
I have couple of chickens (about 10months old) and I wish to introduce another into the group. Do I need to have the same type (i.e the same wyandotte bantams) or can I introduce a different type of bantam? also will they fight or get on and if they fight how do I sort that out.
the run is 40sqft and the coop is 12sqft
any thoughts would be greatful
thanks

You can introduce any chicken but it needs to be done gradually or the old ones will try to drive the new one off their territory by attacking her.

The usual way is to put her in an enclosed run next to the old birds so they get used to her and will accept her into the flock.  May take around two to three weeks.  Then either introduce her to the house at night when they are docile or allow her to run with the others during the day when you can watch them.  Put several feeders and drinkers in the run so they can't guard them all which they will do to start with.  Once accepted there will stiill be pecking order disputes to settle but at least they shouldn't attack in mass.  Have some Gentian purple spray ready for any wounds and separate her if blood gets drawn.  Eventually she'll be accepted though it's easier and best to introduce a couple rather than a single bird.

Hillfooter has said it perfectly.....i also want to echo what he has said about introducing a bird by herself.....not something that is recommened as she will have all the focus on her and she will have a rough time :(. Try using the search engine on here as ther are alot of fantasic posts and very useful snippits of information about introducing new hens , and what can be expected as a lot of people panic when they start to establish the pecking order and remove the hens only for it to begin again when they are re-introduced :( Happy hunting, you will loose a day reading it all, its so interesting ;)

Would you have room for two?
two daughters, nine hens, two goldfish, three cats ...
