Scarifying the lawn
« on: March 03, 2010, 13:59 »
I just scarified half of my lawn, it was full of thatch and moss. Should I put this in the compost bin or the council garden waste bin?

Black bag it and in the rubbish bin . Moss spores hang around for years so should be kept out of the compost heap.

The moss wont compost down properly either. Give it to the council. :D

Unless you do hanging baskets and you can use it to cover the ugly liners with.

I was wondering yesterday when it would need cutting. Ours is turning from yellowy to dark green in patches which means it is growing and it smelled of growing grass too (does that make sense?). In recent years we've been cutting almost all the way through with maybe a gap of only about 4 weeks. I think the answer is when it is showing obvious sign of growth, start with the odd gentle trim. :)

My "lawn" has been flooded for alot of the Winter and the moss is horrific! More moss than grass....I've never seen it so bad! We've got an electric scarifier and I reckon we've got to get cracking on it . Will this and (hopefully) some sun and drier weather keep it under control? Will the grass manage to take over again?
I can't use a weed and feed because of the chooks and anyway...I used it out the front AND re-seeded and it's STILL a mess! I reckon that stuff has got weed seeds IN it!

Mowed mine this morning (cylinder mower), blades right up - only got a couple of handfuls of cuttings - more to get it rolled than to cut it. Went over it with a rake to get rid of all leaves and bits & bobs first. Rolled the Autumn sown areas too (frost had lifted the soil)

Tried to use the scarifier but the ground was still too wet and we ended up using a wire rake. Gor 4 big black bin bags of moss and thatch (going straight down the dump) and only just scraped the surface!
What we need is some warm dry weather.........

Hi Nige,

We're still having frosts every night, plus it isn't growing that much yet, so ours will be left for a bit yet......
