my lawn's scared enough as it is..........

actually it is totally rubbish - we were going to lay a new one anyway, so will as soon as the weather is suitable. It's only a tiny lawn anyway - most of the garden is taken up with raised shrub/flower beds, as it is impossible to dig down - used to be a farm on this site and we think we are on top of the old yard!!!
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

I use my hens as scarifiers. They're brill at getting out moss  :D  I put some in my compost bin but had to take it out again as it was not rotting at all.

I have chickens too but they seem to favour one particular area which gets totally wasted while the rest gets overrun with moss! They are spreading out a bit now we've got rid of some and the grass is growing.
Has anyone else found this year extremely bad for moss?

Yes there is an awful lot of moss about this spring. Do the chicks not eat the grass as well as the moss?

They don't eat the moss, just the grass, which is why I'm scarifying!!! ::) :D

Could the moss and thatch from the lawns be of any use buried in bean trenches as a moisture retainer?

That's exactly what I did with mine after retrieving it from the compost bin (after a year it looked pretty dead but you could still tell it was moss!)

Have turned the bean trench over since then and there's no sign of it so it does take the hint eventually!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

You all seem to be forgetting to spike and aearate the lawn.
Cut it, scarify it then spike it. The lawn needs air too.
