What do you feed your chooks?
« on: February 28, 2010, 12:39 »
Just out of interest - does everyone just feed layers mash/pellets, or does anyone make up their own food concoctions?

I'm thinking more staple foods rather than treats.
Thanks - Lukasmum

I feed organic layers but think rubellite mixes her own feeds to keep everything as it would be in the wild - as natural as possible  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

Mine get layers pellets.  The only other stuff is treats (porridge, cucumber, tomato, apple, dry meal worms) which you already know about.  Sorry not to be more help, but would be interested to see what others feed theirs.

What ever Veg Tescos have on the reduced shelf.  Wizz it in the blender with a bit of poultry spice or garlic and mix with the pellets.  My lot love it and reward us with eggs nearly every day.

Red cabbage equals green poo though. But they love it.

I agree RoyMK! I get some great bargains - but not for me...for the chooks!

Mine love Mondays...I always cook up all my veg peelings on a Sunday evening with garlic and some oats. They all seem to love it.

I'm just intruiged as to whats in layers pellets...mine have them, but I was wondering if there was an 'unprocessed' alternative..

Does this include all veg,  potato as well.  I assume cooking means boiling, but how long for?
Sorry to sound stupid but I just feel that my hens are missing out.

Hi Hendreary,

yes, I put all my peelings in - potato, swede, parsnip, carrot, cabbage stalks, broccoli stalks - the works. On the rare occasion we have a pudding, they get apple peelings in there too.
I just add a little water, so they self-steam, then I mush them up a little with the hand blender and chuck in a handful  of porridge to soak up the excess liquid. I chuck in some chopped garlic when I start cooking it all. To be honest, I don't time how long I cook it - as I am usually doing dinner at the same time. Maybe 15-20 minutes or so?
Garnish with a little chopped parsley and serve! ;)

Most types of fruit go in as well its amazing how quick 4 birds demolish half a melon.

I never cook anything though just wizz it in the blender they seem to eat most things.

Sorry not to reply sooner, been cooking dinner for 5  instead of the expected 3  :nowink: Do wish they'd book in a little sooner!

I am a migraine sufferer and foods set me off, usually additives, not cheese, coffee or chocolate thankfully, so if I eat the eggs I want to know what my girls have been eating. 18 months down the line they all seem fit and well and they lay well too.
This year I will try hatching some of my eggs to see if the offspring are healthy too.
I haven't yet gone natural with my ducks as until my pond is established I don't know that I can provide them with a diet as near to nature as can be.
