Paranoid Chicken
« on: February 23, 2010, 16:32 »
hi,

I've been keeping chickens for only a week. I have two, one is a light sussex. She is only about 13 weeks old, i've clipped her wings as the run fence isnt that high. However, now and again she will suddenly start running around aimlessly for about 5 secs flapping her wings and then stop. Is this an indicator of anything? Or just nothing to worry about.

Thankyou

Excess energy to burn off just like hyperactive kids, don`t worry about it.
In the wild there would be something trying to eat them ten times a day and it pays to keep in practice.

With hens paranoid is normal, flap first -think later if at all. :D

She's just having a bit of a stretch and a dash round.  No harm in that!  Do it myself all the time!

did you clip both her wings?
only one wing should be clipped as it then unbalances them, 2 clipped wings and your back to square 1  ;)

Nah, just the one. I was quite worried about a job involving scissors and a chicken so I read up quite a lot about it before actually clipping.

I was hoping not to have to think about this, my ladies have only been out a couple of times but my light sussex keeps trying to take off and another is now copying her.  They do have a six foot wall to clear so hopefully it will be too high.

Oh bless, she's enjoying herself and running around for the pure joy of it!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Nope...6ft is easy peesy for them to clear (if they so wish of course :D)...mine never flew over, they just landed on it and as there is a killer dog over the fence im afraid their flight feathers had to go!
