Poly tunnels for growing veg.
« on: February 02, 2010, 02:51 »
Does a poly tunnel work basically the same way as a greenhouse? i.e.
What can I grow in poly tunnels?
What are the advantages of a poly tunnel as opposed to a greenhouse?

  Robbo.
Oh sugar!!!! I meant to put this in GYO... any chance Mods.

If at first you don't succeed, maybe failures your thing.

That's basically how they work. Poly tunnels can be more portable if you need to shift them around your site or plan to move. Greenhouses can be moved but at greater effort and possible loss of some glass. Polys are usually more affordable and easily a DIY project for those with budget concerns.

I have a 30x14ft polytunnel. which is buried 2ft in the ground, with timber door and window frames at either end also 2ft in the ground, so its not going anywhere. It seems to warm up in the daytime more than greenhouses on the site do, but looses heat at night.I put up mini polytunnels/plastic greenhouses inside it at this time of year to keep the heat up for sowings. You can grow anything you want in there really just had my 1st carrots of the year(and they were great). beware of condensation though, you need to air the whenever poss.

The general theory is you gain a month either side with stuff that isn't too day-length sensitive... ie you can have tomatoes planted out mid-late April instead of mid-late May (Oxford timings) and still have them going at the end of October.....Generally it can stretch the end of the season more than the start as there will b e more residual warmth in the soil......

I'm planning on putting one up this year to get a decent crop of tomatoes and peppers (plus chillies, some wacky exotics and hopefully a few early salads....
