Growing veg on a balcony (frost protection)
« on: February 01, 2010, 20:39 »
Hiya,

I'm thinking of starting container growing veg on my (largeish) balcony.

I have been looking at cloches etc for protecting my plants from the frost. I can't seem to find any that are suitable - ideally something like a large box with a bottom would really help I think. All I seem to find are ones you peg into the ground which is no good - also being 10 floors up it can get a bit windy occasionally so I need something that won't blow over! If anyone has any ideas where I could get something like that (hopefully not too expensive either!) and any other info on container gardening would be much appreciated (never grown veg before!)

Thanks in advance!!

Good evening and welcome to the site. I would suggest using frost fleece for protection, much cheaper to use than cloches.

Wow thanks for replying to me so quickly! Good evening to you too! If I am mostly going to be growing things in containers will frost fleece work ok, how pinned down does it have to be to work? I am a complete and utter newbie so please excuse my ignorance!

Hi & welcome.

For individual plants, you could use old 2ltr coke bottles with the bottoms cut off.
If you need, you can push a little plant stick in the soil and slip the bottle over the top too help hold it steady.   :)

Hello Spottymint, thank you very much for your reply! That sounds like a great idea, I have no idea how big the plants will get or anything but I guess it will be warmer by the time they are too large to fit inside the bottom of a bottle!

One thing to mention about growing on balconies is to check the load bearing capacity compared to how much weight you'll put on it.

Don't use soil-based composts as they weigh a lot more than other composts, but ensure that the compost doesn't dry out too quickly as it may be more exposed to wind and/or sun on a balcony.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I bought that a couple of years ago, you can see the light through it so it needs to be doubled up at the very least - and won't last the season.

It may fit the bill for some people but be aware that you get what you pay for here  :)

Rememebr you can also use those 5l bottles water comes in, or even a very large plastic bag over the top of the plant and secured around the rim of the pot. Ventilate when you can though during the day  :)
