foxes
« on: January 23, 2010, 12:39 »
we have just had a fox on the front lawn.........
the dog was barking like mad standing on the chair in the front room, i looked through to see a fox walking across the lawn and through the gates into the road.
we live on a housing estate right opposite a fire station, on a bus route.....
the girls were all out loose in the back garden, they are now shut in the run, i dont think they will be out unless we are in the garden, they wont like it but i dont want to loose any more.

the fox did not seem injured, no limping etc, so i can only assume it was desperate to eat to be out in an estate in broad daylight

I live just outside a large city and we have foxes most days, sounds like yours were very lucky girls.
I have lost 7 so far to foxes, so mine are kept in their run unless I am out with them.
Seek not to know all the answers, just to understand the questions.

Foxes that live in urban areas tend to get used to every day noises, traffic, people etc and also lose thier fears to a degree. In some cases I expect it is harder to protect chooks in urban areas than in the countryside where they retain their wariness of people and our dogs. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Or possibly an `orphan' raised by an animal sanctuary and released back to the so called wild.

I do have a lot of admiration for the fox, despite what it has done to my birds. It would be a sad day if there were none.

We have a very persistent one who keeps coming into the garden (once again in the middle of a housing estate)
He/she is a scruffy little thing and I do feel a bit sorry for it.
It's not even really bothered by the dog now.  >:(

Snow Watch program on BBC last week suggested foxes thriving because severe cold killed so many wild birds filling the foxes tummies!!!!!!!

Urban foxes now very common and great to watch. We just have to protect are chooks and enjoy all nature offers!!

i dont mind them as long as they stay out of the back garden.
i feel another 18" of loose fitting netting added to the top of the 6' fence coming on.

Not a bad idea GD, if you think you can improve your defences then you need too, most of us have learned the hard way. Urban foxes are more likely to snatch birds from gardens any time - you won't necessarily see him, just notice a birds is missing :(
