Welcoming newbies.
« on: January 02, 2010, 16:15 »
During the next few weeks we will be allocating plots to new allotmenteers ( several overgrown plots and a few good plots have become available).
I'm in the procees of typing up a little "how to/friendly advice" list for some of them.
So far i have
Do small areas at a time. (overgrown plots)
Cover areas that aren't being dug.
Don't be afraid to ask for advice.
Do little and often.
And finally my favourite, Hoe! Hoe! and Hoe! to keep the weeds down.
Anybody else have any tips?
I will also be giving the newbies a little starter kit of seeds (lettuce, carrots, beans etc.)
Do you think that this is a good idea?

That sounds a good plan!

I don't do anything as organised as you when I'm showing newbies round plots, but one question they invariably ask (as the plot is invariably somewhat overgrown) is how to tackle the weeds - so something setting out the organic and chemical options might be useful.

Also, keep off the soil if it sticks to your boots   :D

Any contacts for local lotty shops / joining forms for the association?

I think the seeds idea is a lovely one too.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks gents,
Yorkie, good ideas thanks.
They will be signing their agreements in the lottie shop :).
For the very overgrown plots we will not be charging rent for the 1st year (we will charge water rent though, about £15).

I think that is a lovely and very welcoming idea.  Won't cost much but will really make them feel welcome.  I always advise new people to plant something, but that might be difficult at this time of year!  Think it is nice to see something growing and have some motivation, so I am a 'clear a little, plant a little' kind of allotmenteer.
