Nexts years spuds
« on: November 30, 2009, 10:18 »
Coming to that time of year when im starting to think about next years spuds to put in, last year my maincrop were very poor and im looking for something different this coming season, ive picked rocket for first early again, but cant decide for main crop yet, ive given sarpo mira a look and also red cara, can anyone recommend a good cropper with decent resistances to disease

Kestrel - whites - you can grab earlies by furtling and leave the rest for mains - no damage at all
Amorosa - reds - mains and fabbo for jacket spuds with no damage whatsoever.

I did Sarpo Mira this year and I wouldn't recommend it. It's fine for mash but rubbish for just about everything else. I'm going to do Cara again  next year - I haven't been much troubled by blight or other pests or diseases, but Cara apparently offers a degree of blight resistance so that's good enough for me.

It really depends on soil, etc. The same variety will give startlingly different results in different soils or situations. Rocket and Swift are very early but I wasn't impressed with the flavour. Next year I'll be trying Dunluce and Epicure as first earlies in the hope that they'll actually taste like new tatties. I don't mind if they're a few weeks later.

There's a big thread at the top of Grow Your Own (one of the stickies) called Potato Results 2009, where people have posted their views on this year's spud crops.  Might be worth looking through that to avoid people needing to duplicate their posts  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Do you have access to a GC or shop that sells spuds loose if so you can try five of as many types as you want to and get an idea as to which you like the best.

As already mentioned its what does well in your area/soil...
thats why I keep a note of which varieties I plant each year.
What did well one year, may  not do as well the following year...
weather changes and all that..even ' if ' the conditions were 'exactly' the same...
there could still be a difference ...say in taste or whatever....

Its all trial and error.... ;) ;)
3yrs on the trot planted say...Charlotte...3 great crops...Next year planting Charlotte...
will they be as tasty as abundant as the past 3 yrs...Who Knows... ::) ::) :)
