Last years spuds
« on: April 09, 2013, 07:08 »
I have a few rows of last years spuds still left in ground, not harvested...I've dug a few up and they have mainly been slugged and seem of little use, we had blight in the tops but removed tops fast nil evidence in potatoes already harvested...would it be better to dig all the remainder up or is it ok to rotavate into to ground

Thanks
Brass ???

Dig them up - they may still be harbouring blight spores. If you rotovate them they will still grow from eyes and give lots of volunteer potatoes to get in way of next crops.

Other than that, I've seen people cover with black plastic and plant crops through

Better to dig em all up and dispose of imo. Every piece of chopped up rotovated spud could start to grow again which isn't ideal!

Definately dig up, my lotty friend had a nightmare leaving some in the ground last year, and had about 80 spuds with holes all over them.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

I've been fortunate as the four rows of spuds left in the plot that I am taking over are in good condition. Dug up a bucketful yesterday and had some for dinner. Just got to get the rest out but it's a bit wet today. I'm leaving a half plot in good condition to take on a full one with about a third covered in brambles, docks, couch grass etc. Must have been the sun affecting my decision making powers.
