Potato Results - 2009
« on: July 29, 2009, 07:16 »
As the spuds come up, undoubtedly members will want to post their results. It may be useful to keep them all in one spot, rather than have numerous threads all over the place.

So please post here. Please keep it brief, (as below) as with any replies, so that we don't end up not seeing the wood for the trees.

For a change, please keep this on topic! I will keep an eye on things and may just be tempted to press the "edit" or "delete" buttons now & then!

My results so far...

Swift (First Early). Average yield, slugs like them
Pentland Javelin (First Early). Very good yield, few slug holes
Charlotte (Second Early). Excellent yield, no slug holes.
Kestrel (Second Early). Excellent yield, some very large spuds. No slug holes
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Charlotte (First Earlies), small container grown (!), very good crop (14 new potatoes per 14" flower pot), excellent consistency of spud size, no blemishes. Will definitely be growing these in beds next year. (I had the seed potatoes knocking around, nowhere to plant them, so thought what the hell, and put em in some spare pots. Result!)

Pentland Javelin (First Early). Very good yield, no slug holes up to 1.6Kg yield after 12 weeks. Comment: An excellent all round potato, served as new, mashed, roasted or surprisingly superb chips!

Charlotte (Second Early). Excellent yield, no slug holes. Massive fan of this spud. Great waxy taste, consistently good performer. First on my list!

Desiree (Main Crop) Early days, as only just dug first one up. Will report later.

Good idea, DD!  Might be useful if people could note soil type as well, maybe?

I'm on clay, and planted Dunluce, Desiree and Anya this year.  Results so far:

Dunluce - bit scabby but no slug holes; average yield; floury, falls apart a bit when boiled but good and crispy when roasted; average taste - not bad but I wouldn't shout about it.

Adding in the other two now I've dug them up:

Desiree - good yield, a bit of scab but not as much as the Dunluce.  Seems to be a good all-round potato, reasonably tasty but didn't knock my socks off.  Main problem seems to be that the few really huge potatoes were miles away from the stems so I put my fork through all of them...  :(

Anya - really poor yield, and what was there was mostly either rotten or eaten by slugs.  I got about one small usable potato from each seed potato!  The taste seems to be good, though, and they're an interesting shape.  I might give them a go in a compost bag next year but I don't think I'll be growing them in the ground again.
