Split tomatoes

Is it safe to eat tomatoes that split when they come into contact with water.

Don't think there'd be a problem, but then again I just scrape the mould off cheese  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yes I am in that camp also. I don't take much notice of best before dates. As long as it tastes ok.

I would only probably use the split ones to make a tomato sauce.

I use em just the same :) If the split bit looks a bit manky ( means it's an old split usually) then i just cut that bit out :D

Just as mumofstig says, cut out any really manky bits, but if it's freshly split, I just cut them up along the split and nobody notices.  ;)

I managed to buy some cheese from a well known red and blue supermarket last month that was actually past is sell by date.  It tasted better than usual.

So probably no use on this thread I am afraid.

A lot of my tomatoes have been affected this year.  This is probably down to my watering regime that is not rigid to say the least.  You will find that most will split after a big drink (especially if they have gone short for a while)  It is only my cherry toms that are affected, but I make sure I use these first.

Luckily I have so many coming off at the mo that a few mouldy ones don;t make too much of a impact.   The slightly moudly ones get a wipe then used, the really bad ones go striaght in the bin (not composted as they will only sprout next year)

All our cherry toms do that when we wash em.  We try to pick em before they're completely ripe. Get the impression that they've got a slightly better flavour then, too.
Must be because they're very thin skinned, I suppose.

Loads of my little ones split. I chuck some and make the rest into tomato sauce by flinging in the oven with garlic and onions, and basil. Basil is ridiculously easy to grow, bearing in mind what they charge you for it in the shops.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
