Rhubarb
« on: September 29, 2009, 18:14 »
I always thought Rhubarb was easy to grow - it is not!  My allotment soil is heavy clay, tried several varieties but always the corm does not grow well and rots after the 1st year - HELP!!

I have grown Rhubarb from seed and had good healthy plants but they will not survive the winter indoors or out - any suggestions :(

put it on an underground bed of gravel ?
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

My allotment's a bit like that.   I had to dig up a rhubarb cuz it looked sickly, put it in a pot and gave it some tlc.   Some months later hey presto it sprouted a new leaf! Nanny rhubarb! :tongue2:
I'm queen of my own compost heap and I'm getting used to the smell.

Try digging in plenty of strawy compost etc (in a patch bigger than the rhubarb), and then plant the rhubarb in a little mound. Should stop it rotting in winter.

Sorry to hear of your disappointment with rhubarb, greenhead.
Killing rhubarb is actually very difficult for most people. I put lots of chopped up bits of rhubarb roots on the compost heap last year and it grew really well. I just can't get rid of the stuff.
Perhaps you are putting it in too deep?
If your soil is very waterlogged then tode's suggestion of a raised area is a good one.
Have a look around your neighbours plots to see who has good strong plants and ask them for a root.
I hope you have more success next year.
