New to this and desperate for advice
« on: August 22, 2009, 17:54 »
Hi all, I just stumbled on this site. It looks great but need some help please! I decided to have a go at growing tomatoes (the grandchildren love to pick and eat) I have no greenhouse so took a chance outside in growbags. I am loosing a lot as they are going brown and nobbly on top and not ripening. Please can anyone give a beginner a helping greenfinger
Many thanks

Good evening and welcome to the site. What do you mean by brown and  nobbly? If the stems and leaves have brown blotches this is a sign of blight.

Re: New to this and desperate for advice - tomatoes

Hi David
Thankyou for your reply There are some areas of brown on some of the stems but it is the tomatoes themselves that are affected. Not all of them and not all on one set. I think I have taken a risk trying to grow them outside but there are some really nice looking tomatoes there if they only ripen.
Thanks again
Mary

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I would say it looks like blight, but I'm no tomato expert &  there are loads of diseases that can affect them! The leaves look as if they have some on too. If you pick off all the tomatoes, wash & dry them then try the banana in a drawer trick you might get some to ripen. I've also got some of mine on a slatted table outside taking their chances, but not all of mine have got it yet..............
