Chilli expert grower advice please
« on: August 05, 2009, 19:47 »
I've got some chilli pants growing, some are about 2ft high one is 3ft...

I've only got flowers and chillis on the top bit  3 inches of them, so i'm expecting the yield will be poor?

It's not a problem as such, but I'd like to know for next year, should I have pinched them out like you do  toms ?  Or maybe something else?

Thankyou :)

I've read conflicting advice on a chilli forum I joined ( @link chillisgalore.com ) ... tad like opinnions here really :tongue2:

I've got some that were pinched out that are rocking, and others that are suffering ... and then I've got some that weren't pinched out that are rocking ... and a few others that are hitting the ceiling ( roof just doesn't rhyme ;) )

I didn't mention that they've got some new leafage appearing up the stems, could that be new chillis appearing ( EVENTUALLY) ? I've got them in the conservatory so they ge4t good sun ( when it appears >:()

I grew some Jalopenos last year that yielded well, but were tasteless and had no heat. So the one's I'm growing this year are hot  :tongue2:

I grew jalapenos last year and they had no heat.  From what I've read on here they really need to be stressed to become hot.

Think I'm going to get a fairly small crop from my chillis (none of them bigger than 2 foot but a reasonable number of chillis on them. Had heard that they crop better in their second year if you over winter them and had been thinking about this (know it's a bit early). Has anyone tried this?

They need more sun ....  depending on the variety 2-3 foot is normal then the canopy contains the peppers, others like the habs will make more compact plants and fruit lower down and even on the main stem. What are you growing?

Jals have very little heat anyway Ice, but over watering makes them very bland. Try something like a hot wax, they're slightly warmer without being silly hot.

They're been arguing over pinching out for at least 4 years to my knowledge  ;)

My Habs aren't that compact. Is that to do with the size of pot?

I did wonder about pinching mine out?  Should I remove the peppers now, and could I hopefully get a second flush?

Sorry Snips for Hijacking, but thought it was a very similar query to your questions D'ya mind?  :D

You posted that just to upset me didnt you Bombers  :D

That looks compact enough to me, they're not dwarf after all.  Leave it alone its a lovely plant.  That looks like a 6" pot - its fine but you're not going to get a huge yield from it, I use 10inch container pots.

Let the pepper ripen you're very unlikely to get a second flush now.  It looks like it could do with a bit of a feed too.
