ordered my virkon s as above, thanks foxy, just another job to add to the list.

we have an unhappy dog, dont think that she likes not being the centre of attention.

we have 2 wyandottes, who are getting fat darting in and pinching the treats meant for florence when we are distracted, like last night, when we were watching lizzie and vera, the 2 buff rock bantams, jumping up to catch flying ants.......even the dark sides have lighter moments.....

oh i hope she gets well soon, they are a worry aren't they, our horses, dogs, cats, sheep and goats are nowhere near as much trouble as the hens ::)

well hope did not work.
i guess i always knew that it would not.
not nice to lose 2 out of 6 in a week when they were all supposed to come fully vaccinated from a well advertised breeder.
not feeling good today.

So Sorry Martyn, you've tried your best, will you be having an autopsy?
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

gone to the vets, he will ring with autopsy later..

just upset because we tried to start off the right way, being novices, we went to a breeder to have vaccinated hens, not ones from the market, and have now lost 2 within a week to a horrible disease, that they should not have caught. so distressing to see them go down hill so fast.

thanks for all the messages.

I know its no consolation but from what i understand there are a couple of types of mareks! 1 causes the internal tumors and the other effects the nervous system! the vaccine may only prevent the one that attacks the nervous system as this is the more common of the 2, or like you say they may just of not worked  :(

have spoken to the breeder, was very non commital, said it was a strange case, especially as the 4 that are left have all been of the lay for the last 4 weeks as well, but if i wated to box them up for a 300 mile journey he would look at the 4 i have left, then told me that i should not have bark down in the run as this can cause problems, why did he not tell me that when i bought them !!!!!! and that i should definatley NOT be using diatom in the coop for red mite, i should be using creosote on the perches and cracks instead.
now i am really confused, and am thinking that i may have caused the deaths of my 2 hens....

Martyn, dont blame yourself for these deaths, if its Mareks its not your fault. I dont know about the bark but everyone uses Diatom against RM. Creosote is illegal, although people use it. Take care.

Hi Martyn
So sorry to hear about your girls - and it sounds like very bad luck to get 2 diseases
I know just how you feel - I lost my first hen last weekend and i was wracked with guilt about whether I had been negligent but the OH persuaded me that this does 'just happen' sometimes even with the best TLC and disease prevention measures.
Be intersting to hear what your vet says next week
thinking of ya
