another poorly bantam
« on: August 17, 2009, 16:34 »
well it looks like we have another bantam who is not well.
her comb has started to go pale, she is becoming lethargic, finds a quiet corner and closes her eyes, still goes after mealworms and eats well, has not layed in 6 weeks.

i have disinfected with vikron after the last 2 died, with mareks and viral hepetitis.

the 2 wyandottes, however have both started to lay again, so i can only assume they are ok, at the moment.

just have to see how she goes in the next week.

the breeder was very non comital, so i wont be going back there when we do eventually have some more

you are having such bad luck! Really sorry to hear you have another one :( I am sure you have checked for red mite, might be worth an extra check?

we had 6, all from the same breeder, 3 rock bantams, 2 wyandotte and 1 rhode island, have lost 1 bantam and the rhode island, 1 bantam poorly.

autopsy showed no infestations of parasites, internal or external, coop has been disinfected and cleaned just to be sure, nothing living in there, apart from the chooks.

do i trust another breeder when the time comes ? any recomendations for rhode islands ?

does not look good.
checked where she was perching last night, her poo has started to become watery with only small amount of hard matter.
she did have a full crop last night, empty this morning, but still lethargic, she has been drinking today, and the last remaining bantam is standing about with her today.
cleaned and sprayed the coop with vikron again, leaving them out till it dries, in the hope the wyandottes are ok.

there are some indicators in the books and sites, that wyandottes are more resistant to mareks than some other breeds, so i may be keeping just wyandottes in the future.

Did the vet who did the autopsy not give you a reason for the illness ?

Have your bids had a course of antibiotics in case of a bacterial gut infection ?

Martyn, so sorry to hear you've got another poorly chook, you aren't having much luck at all are you :(
Aunty, i think I died from Mareks and the other viral Hepatitus?
Is the hepatitus linked to the Mareks, a different symptom as its a bit weird 2 different illnesses isn't it?
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

Oh Martyn im so sorry!:( there does seem to be so much around at this time of year! even with the best hygeine routine its like waging war! these bugs, virus's and bacteria are all around waiting to invade!
I still have poorly araucanas! they have had a course of antibiotics which hasnt done anything so it is now up to their immune system!

Oh I'm sorry I didn't realise  :(

Marek's is a Herpes virus but I wasn't aware that chickens got viral hepatitis (I know turkeys and ducks do) so I had to look it up and it's an Adenovirus.  So definitly two different diseases.
