Ducks &Geese
« on: July 25, 2009, 22:00 »
I'm considering getting some ducks &geese on my plot.My brother has kept some chickens  on the plot next to mine for the past couple of months & ive been giving him a hand recently and i think i've caught the bug.
Are ducks &geese as easy to keep as the chickens seem to be?
Can anyone reccomend me a website that offers some basic info?
  Cheers

yes i'd like to know the same thing as there are some beautiful ducks i really would love to have.  Id like to know if they are noisy too as my plot is near to houses.  I heard geese make good guard dogs and will fight a fox off.  Apparently ducks need a house with a ramp but when it comes to water I'm a bit puzzled.  One person said to me that a pond would be no good for them as they will dirty the water and then won't use it so you need to change the water at least twice a week?? Others have said that's nonsense although I guess within reason. a paddling pool or old tin bath sunk into the ground is ok apparently. Well, we need some advice guys

There is a bit of information here, can't remember exactly how far we had got putting it together but if there are any questions, just add them on.

Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

I'm getting prepared for ducks and have got a kennel with ramp plus one of those kiddies shell sand/paddling pool thingies. This way they can have a paddle and it's easy to tip the water out twice a week. My veg is fenced off (although my chicks have disvoered that it's easy to get through the holes  :D but they seem to leave it alone and just eat the slugs and snails.
Staffies are softer than you think.

My plot is about 130 feet long,at the moment im growing on about 50 ft and will probably go up to about 90-100 ft next year. The whole plot was covered in thick bramble,  various weeds and lots of stones. As we've cleared it a bit at a time it seems to be getting worse the further down we go,with the last 30-40 ft  really unworkable with the odd patch of bramble covered rocks&dirt among loads of rubble. This is probably why every other plotholder has their shed &junk pile at this end.I'm thinking of housing the birds here if i can clear  enough of it.
