We usully bed our geese and ducks down on straw. This year small bale straw seems very difficult/impossible to find locally. Iam therefore looking for alternatives. I was considering rubber chippings as one, which would be romoved weekly to be washed through and returned. Has anyone tried this ? Another thought was some form of hemp based bedding. Would anyone have any thoughts, or other suggestions for us to consider ?

I use sawdust/shavings from the local woodmill.  Its just waste to them and they are happy to see it go so I always give them a few eggs!

I use dust extracted shavings which help to keep the duck house smelling sweeter than it may do - ducks are dirty!! However, rape straw is now being produced for bedding and it is cheaper than shavings. Hemp is also excellent and breaks down well. Personally i will stay on shavings.
