suitable planting for tiddlers??
« on: April 21, 2007, 20:38 »
Got some friends over tomorrow bring along their tiddlers.
They are city folk (but they do have a garden) so I thought for a bit of entertainment I'd let the tiddlers plant a few seeds in pots to take home with them. Maybe even paint the pots first.

What's going to give easy maintenance? Thinking broad beans, sunflower and maybe one other.

Suggestions most welcome!!!
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

can you start them in pots and replant easily? or maybe just plant in a big pot to start off with and leave it there??

Our daughter has just spent an afternoon with Matthew, planting cress in egg shells which they've painted faces on. He's now got green haired monsters and  cress sarnies to look forward to.
Still glowing, still growing, still going strong!

yes you can start them in pots, then plant out later. then save the seed  for next year. hang the flowers up in your green house. the stems are full of potash and good as green manure. let the young plant reach 500mm and chop them down and compost them.

Sun flowers are good if they have a small bit of earth,if they plant one each and one for mum/dad then see whos grows biggest then use seed heads to feed birds. If they`ve got room for a hanging basket then tumbling toms are good and produce plenty for little fingers and mouths. You can at a push grow strawbs in a pot,it would only be transplanting from 1 pot to a bigger but they will be thinking of the end product.Or you could try nastertions which grow quite quickly, have pretty flowers and produce nice big seeds!

Hi.

My son planted a few peanuts, and sunflower seeds, and in a couple of days he's going to plant potatoes...he'll love it.

good luck with whatever you try.

The first things I ever planted was mustard and cress and radishes.  I know you don't transplant radishes from a pot into the ground, but if there were only a few in a pot, perhaps they could stay there?  They grow really quickly too!

?   Presumably raw ones?  I've only ever seen roasted ones in the shops.
