A bit small for runner beans in my opinion.  You will need to water them 3 times a day in warm weather.

I grew some runners and in another year peas in a smilar sized pot, although it was deeper than yours.  They did reasonably well, but like Aunt Sally says, they will need watering a lot as they are thirsty plants.

What I did to help was to stir in some of the water retaining gel crystals, helps keep the water in a bit.

The dwarf french beans I've grown in the past generally reach about 12 to 18 inches high, I've never had to support them.   If poss sow them little and often so you have a nice regular supply all summer.  My method is to start off indoors or in GH, plant out when 4 to 5 inches high (scatter slug pellets) and sow more indoors straight away, approx every 3 to 4 weeks in the summer should keep you going with fresh beans.

how many do you sow at a time roughly?

is it too small in terms of surface area or depth of tub?

The volume of compost in the tub.

It would mean that you have to water VERY frequently as there is not enough compost to hold sufficient water for the bean plants.
