Easibed and Daily Poo Picking Tip
« on: July 23, 2009, 13:41 »
Thought I'd share a tip I thought of in payment for all the generous information I have gleaned from this forum over the 4 weeks I have had my girls

I started using Easibed in the coop and used a small trowel to poo pick daily. It occurred to me that a cheap Pooper Scooper would work better. And it does, scoop up give a few sideways shakes and all the dry Easibed falls through the holes leaving only good compost for the bin

By the way the Pooper Scooper was 99p from a pound shop

That looks like a good tip, might try easibed as use dust extracted wood shavings at the mo...  I have one girl that lives on her own that is sooo messy in her bedding, yet the others hardly ever make a mess in their coop...  NOW THEIR RUN!!!! :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2:

Hi Marc. Welcome.  :)

Good tip. I prefer rubber gloves and a home made scraper. My OH refuses and uses your method !  :D

After using shavings and easybed! i find shavings much less smelly and they absorb more! I have been using easybed in my growers shed and after 1 day it was smelly again so have just got some more snowflake' shavings! easybed is great for the runs though i just dont use it in the coop anymore
Great idea with the poop scoop though! will give that a go! :D

Welcome Marc.

What is easibed made of?

It's dust-free recycled whitewood fibre, larger pieces than sawdust. It's used for horse bedding

is easibed the same as hemp bedding, i was thinking about using hemp for my chicks they are 5 weeks old now, i wasnt sure if it was too sharp on their feet, or should i stick to chopped straw as we have now.

I use hemp now in my run and it is fabulous - no oders at all and the poo dries up quickly.  In fact, I don't need to scoop but once a week.  I use newspapers in the hen house proper.  It's only used at night for roosting and I just replace it every morning.  Works a treat.  The hen boxes have hemp in them too.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

I'm probably being thick, but isn't hemp some sort of recreational substance!!! Don't you find your girls chilling in the corner, wearing Kaftans and head bands

No, they don't get the "fun" bit of the hemp!  I use Jopack bedding which lasts for ages and really dries everything up.

i was using flax bedding but for now i have gone back to snowflake shavings as thats what i had for the horses last time , but i only use it for the nest boxes now as i find it easier to keep the main floor clear .

LOLOLOL!!  Yeah, I thought the same thing about hemp.  But truth be told, I don't see any stray plants popping up anywhere and my hens are by no means chilled!  I believe it is the stalks that are used.  My questioh is, just where did the hemp plants come from, hhhmmmm????? :nowink:
