Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

"It's just that most cockerels are bred for table so don't have much meat on them."  - quote from Grannie Annie.............

Grannie, I thought table birds were a meatier type to rear!?

Sorry Cathangirl, don't know why I typed that! yes, meat birds are bred specially to eat but most cockerels like the hybrid ones that we get occasionally, don't have much meat on them.

Don't take any notice of the ramblings of an old lady!!!!    :) :)

someone told me yesterday that "during the war" you would swap a chicken with your neighbour when you wanted to eat one.  That way you didn't have to kill your own chicken you'd brought up!

All the best ideas and phrases came from 'during the war' i think  ;)

I really don't think I could do it  :blush:Even if someone did the deed for me. They will be pets still when they no longer lay. But.....I do see the sense in eating them and renewing the stock.

I'm just a big old softy
8 chickens, 5 cats, 2 guinea pigs and 1 other half.

I'm thinking of doing this if I can't find good homes for my cockerals that I have hatched they shall have to go in the pot.
