How fast to get through pellets
« on: June 23, 2009, 13:46 »
As out hens were broody when we got them, they were not eating as much as expected, but they are starting to move about more so I expect them to get through the pellets quicker. I plan to buy a couple of months worth of pellets on payday, but have no idea how many this is. Can people reply to this with how many kilos of layer pellets they get through a month and for how many birds please? We have three bantam types and six chicks but plan on only keeping two of the chicks long term. I am hoping 20k's would last me more than a month.

Thanks!

 :)

a sack of layers pellet {£4.50 } will easily last you 6-8 weeks if you also give the chickens leftover scraps , you can boil peelings up and bring feeding cost's down.
chickens are probably the cheapest animal to feed , 2 sacks of pellets and a sack of corn were lasting me about 14 weeks for 12 hens , but last week i bought 7 extra hens.

£6 per 25kg here...

The chicks will need a seperate feed, layers ration has too much calcium and can force the pullets into lay too early by all accounts.

Feed them chick crumb and then at 6 weeks old switch to growers ration.

Easiest way is to say each bird eats 125g of feed a day, only an average mind bannties I would have thought would be less, a sack of pellets (20kg ) lasts me more or less exactly 40 days and I have 4 birds.
Like bubs says you can feed 'em kitchen scraps ( but your not supposed to, apparently illiegal I think ) anyhow make sure it's plenty of veg, not too much starchy stuff fat birds lay less and can have other problems eg more tendency to prolapse.
I pay £6.50 for 20kg

when i got my chickens about 14 months ago i was paying about £14 for 2 sacks {a sack of pellets and a sack of corn , 20 kilo sacks}  ,  now i get 3 sacks for £13.50 .
while the budgie seed i used to buy has rocketed to £16 a sack best move i ever made changing to chooks. :) :)

mine are fed on organic layers and mixed corn and costs quite a lot more, plus I have to get my supplier to order it in for me. A sack of each lasts me about 5 weeks.
Staffies are softer than you think.

My 3 got through the last 20kg bag of layers pellets in 3 months. They also free range and get some scraps and corn. I found out recently that they like the seeds out of melons so they get those too.

Aunt Sally, where do you get your feed from and what brand is it?
I get through about 20 sacks a month.

I pay around £10 a bag. Lasts me about month for 14.

I have some kind of grain aswell (oats,corn,wheat/mix). That lasts about 2-3 months as it's a treat.

20kgs.

Are you sure at that price, Bubs, that you are not buying Genetically Modified layers pellets?   That is the cheapest.

Non GM around here is £7.20 and Organic is £12.50

Wow I thought I was getting a good deal paying 5.95euros for 10kg at the feedmill! (That's 2ème stage - so growers I suppose).  That lasted about 2 weeks with the last of the chick crumb mixed in, so on Saturday I'll be getting a 25kg sack, which will hopefully last a month - but the bigger they get, the more they are eating ;)

I have three girls and go through a 20kg bag every 3 months approximately.  They do get a bit of corn and a lot of veg as well but as I get eggs most days from all 3, I figure I have the right ratios.
