Charlottes with mushy middle
« on: June 22, 2009, 17:31 »
My Charlottes have been great up to now, but I was dissapointed and a bit worried with yesterday's harvest. The largest potatoes of the crop looked great, but when I cut them in half for the pan, the middles were mushy, surrounded by a pale brown ring. Any idea what this is? Going back tomorrow to get some more and see what they are like.

Any advice would be great!

Sounds like they have grown really big and have what we call hollow heart. This sometimes happens if they get too big. I think off the top of my head that it can be caused by a lack of Boron. If the seed is Scottish you should not have brown rot.

Could be brown rot or ring rot aelf :(

Thanks Aunty. I hope it isn't either of those, my spuds don't look like the pics so that is reassuring.

Thanks also Iain, Do the centres start mushy then go hollow? They have suddeny got very big (nearly as long as my hand)

Lack of Boron does cause brown hearts in sweeds and hollow stems in cauliflowers so that might be logical Iain.

(That's a nice web site, I've added it to our 'useful' sticky)

Yes that is what happens and the size you  say they are would be about the correct size for that to happen. A smelly slimey mess in the middle.
Yes I thought that boron was essential in turnips and swedes so I am thinking it could be needed for spuds aswell :D

still got 2 full rows of Charlotte in the ground. Is it time to pull them all up? Do you think my main crop (King Edwards) will be affected?  :(

I would nip down to your local garden centre and buy some foliar feed such as maxicrop and spray it onto the King eddies as it should contain alot of nutrients.
It will probably be too late for the charlotte but just lift them as you need them and cut the big ones in half before you boil them to make sure they are not hollow.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll seek out some foliar feed (with added boron!) tomorrow. Fingers crossed I'm not too late  :)

Have a google for foliar feeds and see if you can find what is in some of them first so that you can be prepared.

I use Wilkinsons liquid growmore (must get some more)  it has boron on the list of nutrients.

update:

Dug up 2 plants yesterday and got over 5Kg of big Charlottes and every one of them is fine! No mushy middles. Wondering now if only one plant was affected and thinking about breathing a huge sigh of relief!
