Chitting charlottes
« on: March 20, 2013, 11:25 »
Hi
I eagerly started Chitting some Charlotte potatoes a few weeks ago and they are sprouting nicely. What is a good size of 'chit' before planting? And do I plant chit down or up?
Obvious newbie!

An inch is a good size, but not critical.

The chits are the shoots - so "Chits Up"!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Given that most seed spuds are somewhat egg-shaped and have chits all over the "rose" end (and sometimes over all the potato) I just lie them down when planting - some chits are bound to be up, some down, and some sideways!  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Looking at the three types of spud we are chitting, the Charlotte have the smallest chits, the Annabelle are a bit bigger, and the Lady Christl are even bigger, although we got them a couple of weeks later.

I suppose this is signal of the titles 'First Earlies' and 'Second Earlies', as Charlotte are the latter type. Presumably 'Main Crop' wouldn't be showing much at all at the moment?

My Blue Belle main crop have the biggest shoots of all

Some of it must be to do with storage at the suppliers, I would think.

Please let no-one suggest we run a "Biggest Chits" competition - it could lead to some serious misunderstandings!
