Mushy onions
« on: March 30, 2013, 10:59 »
Hi all, planted Japanese Onion sets in Oct, they have all turned to mush. They have retained their shape but are completely soggy. There is foliage about 6-8".
Will they develop or should I start again.
Thanks

is the foliage green or yellow?  If yellow (the entire leaf not just tips which can happen), then the bulbs have had it, otherwise they are fine.  The bulbs will develop proper round about May  ;)

As long as they have green leaf they should be fine. Dig down and see if there are roots. I have seen this with shallots, especially when there have been hard frosts through the Winter. Once the plants are established the original bulb is going to rot away, usually slowly but when frosted more quickly.

Try dibbing a hole , fill it with sharp sand and plant your set's in it next time.

The foliage is green, so I guess I'll leave them & see what happens
