Woke up to chicks this morning
« on: June 19, 2009, 10:16 »
Very exciting but one is stuck to the incy and struggling to get up. What should I do as to try and intervene myself will mean opeing the incy for some time and endanger the others.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Take the chick out give him a little wash in warm water, dry as best possible. When you put him back in put a little corner of damp flannel in there to get the humidty back up quickly. Only a small piece mind as you just want to up it temporarily and quickly.
You should be fine opening it once or twice.

It seems to have 'glued' itself to the incy it is lying on its side and is waving its legs about trying ,presumably to get up. I did try to move it quickly this morning but it does seem well and truly 'glued'.

The others are fine and I worry about endangering them by opening the incy for too long - I don't think it will be a quick job trying to peel it off!

 Only thing I can suggest is warm water on cotton wool buds and work as quickly as possible the warm water should help in it's release.

There isn't a fan in the bottom of the incy is there ???

I would leave it, you could hinder the hatching of the others by opening your incubator.
If it is meant to die it will, or if it is strong it will survive.
Good Luck with the rest of the hatch.

Thank you all.

Yes there is a fan but in the top but I cannot isolate it.

Thank you Woodside Farm that was what I was worried about.

Anyway I opened the incy last night as the other chicks had all dried off and  freed the chick. We left if for about an hour and a half and then decided we had to do the horrible but kind thing. It may have been damaged by the others stomping all over it continually and was probably exhausted. Not nice but necessary.

The other four I have moved under a lamp and appear to be doing well.

Its my first time hatching and is very exciting :D :D
