electric fencing

Hello everyone
Ive had chickens and ducks for a year but we have just been discovered by a fox. Down to one chicken now.   We live in a town with a big back garden but it backs onto the railway so thats where its comming from. I have been given a snall fence generator (black box 4 wires) What I wondered is should we get netting or tape/wire and if tape/ wire what gaps to use. Also how safe is it as grandson likes going to see the girls. Any advice would be appreciated as the girls do like to roam.

Sorry about losing your hens to the fox. Electric fencing/netting can be very effective if installed  and maintained properly. Your black box with 4 wires -should be 2 wires which is your input (conects to a leisure battery for the power) one other needs to connect to an earth (a metal stake  about a foot in the ground)and the fourth wire to the fence/netting itself. A photo might help here! Do you know what the output voltage is? A fence tester would help, as to deter a fox you need a minimum of 3,000 volts.

have a look here for some ideas and tips on electric fencing
