2 questions - leeks and sweetcorn
« on: April 10, 2007, 08:38 »
firstly the leeks - i sowed some leeks in the greenhouse at the end of feb, they all came up and are now about 4 inches tall but very thin. my question is do i plant them out now or will they get thicker or should i just scrap them and sow some straight in the ground?
(ok technically thats 3 questions!!)

right sweetcorn - i have 2 different types and would like to grow both but kind of remember reading something about cross pollination, our plot is 370 sqm so could i get away with one at one end and one at the other?

Leeks : try to harden them off gradually with a view to getting them outside soon.   No harm in resowing either, only this time put them outside as soon as they break the surface.

The sweetcorn depends on the variety, if you have a normal and a super sweet then dont put them in the same ground, if they are both super sweet you might get away with it.

With the sweetcorn maybe sow and plant the two varieties at different times, with the aim that one has finished flowering before the other one starts - the other advantage will be that you have more chance of spreading the glut of sweetcorn cobs - and plant the two varieties them as far apart as you can manage, bearing in mind what your neighbours are up to sweetcorn-wise...

Good luck - freshly picked and cooked sweetcorn cobs that you have grown yourself, with a dab of butter and sprinkling of black pepper are yyyuuuuummmy  :)

re the leeks, put them outside in the elements and plant them out when they are bigger.
