I want to plant some sweetcorn. Thinking of planting them in loo rolls before I plant them out. Do I need to chit the seeds before putting them into loo rolls?

And is now the right time to start doing this?

No and yes - In that order!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

For your location it is probably the perfect timing.

No need to chit.  Always can do if bored of course....

One seed to a 3-4 inch pot and let it be. 8) Keep warm and moist nowt else needs doing to them.

I prefer them in wider arrangement than a bog roll provides.

Now don't shout at me, but I used peat pots like this..

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/6cm-ROUND-PEAT-POTS-PROPAGATION-SEEDS-EXTRA-VALUE-PACK_W0QQitemZ190198321836QQihZ009QQcategoryZ20536QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262

Got a better deal than this though as they were offering a lot free at the time. 3" pots - fine in theory, but when you are doing nearly 100 plants, that's a lot of pots, space & compost. These are a bit smaller, but have proven more than adequate in the past.

I solemly swear that next year I'll try paper pots, just did not have the time to make them this year.

I've tried the loo roll approach, but with poor results. Less then 10% germination and had fungi growing on the rolls. I wasn't going to knock this method though, as I know others have had sucess, I may have had a bad batch of seed.

Hmm, interesting. I think I might some paper pots this weekend rather.... don't fancy the idea of mouldy loo rolls.

Not everyone gets fungi - seems to depend on the brand - apparantly something in the glue.

Was tempted to say the Radio Times, tied to the wall with a bit of string, (my Great Aunt did this in the years of the 'Thunderbox').

Depends which brand has the best offer, one of them usally has 6 for the price of 4, 12 for the price of 9 or similar.

They all do the same job in the end. (Did I really say that?).
