The bad thing about inheriting a veggie patch from someone else, is that you end up with plant being in places you don't necessarily want them...

I believe they are a thorness blackberry, but I can't honestly remember a single fruit last year.

To me, they are in a really, really daft place, and are quite happy taking up almst a 1/4 of my entire veggie patch.

After speinding a significant number of minutes weeding around the base of the plants there seems to be almost a "bole" of old/dead growth about 6ins in diameter for each palnt.  Looking at the leaves, there are some flower buds appearing.  Now, my question is... do I say "what the heck" and dig them up now; or do I wait until the autumn, after fruiting to dig them up?

If you want to keep the plants and give them the best chance of thriving, I'd wait until the back end of the year, once they've gone dormant.

additonally if you ask around  someone else might want them.

Don' blackberries fruit on 2nd year growth? Maybe they were cut back and thats why you got nothing last year?

If you wait til autumn at least you know where its worth moving them carefully or best just to yank umm out.
