What’s the situation with slug pellets?
« on: May 09, 2020, 22:46 »
Am I right in thinking that the metaldehyde ban was overturned? I want to avoid it, but am not sure that pellets I am buying are met free. I have some labelled as organic, and they mention ferric phosphate, but the garish blue colour made me suspicious and I wonder whether they contained metaldehyde, and it just wasn’t mentioned in the label. Anyone know what the situation is at present? Thanks in advance.

The ones labeled organic use ferric phosphate as the active ingredient, and do not contain metaldehyde. They likely are blue because that is the colour that people expect slug pellets to be.

If metaldehyde isn't mentioned on the label then you can be confident that it doesn't contain it.  There are strict labelling rules about the product ID number and active ingredients.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

The current situation is:-
"The High Court has overturned the UK’s unilateral ban on the use of the metaldehyde molluscicide active ingredient, following a judicial review case instigated by manufacturer Chiltern Farm Chemicals. Slug pellets based on the active will be available for at least a further 18 months from the original June 2020 cut-off date. "

i was told I can use the rest of my blue slug pellets up to the date mentioned and until the ban comes into force although we have gone with ferric phosphate we only use the other pellets on securely netted raised beds not on the open sowings
