They're here. Whoopee.
« on: June 07, 2009, 11:16 »
At last the waiting is over!! Our 6 girls arrived y'day, after a long sea journey cramped together in close quarters with about 500 others. At the farm, they were unceremoniously dumped into our boxes by their necks, legs or wings. Never again would they be held in that way. They had to endure another 20 min drive, while listening to Radio Jersey, until we gently released them into their newly-converted (used to be the old wash house/pigsty) henhouse. They stayed indoors for the best part of the day, until coerced into the outside run (they really didn't want to go out). I don't think they'd ever seen earth or ants and we all cheered when one of them had a really enjoyable dust bath. Really, it is so time consuming - all the family spent the rest of the afternoon, hen watching. And Granpa regaled us with stories of how eggs helped them survive during the Occupation.
One question please, how much corn do we give them before their bedtime?

Crapaud,
Welcome to hen keeping.
What a lovely happy ending, (or should that be a lovely happy beginning?) to their awful journey.
Are they ex-battery - you mention they've probably never seen earth or ants?
I agree with TMG, WHERE ARE THE PHOTOS?   :tongue2: ::)
So glad that your Grandpa has a few happy stories from the Occupation, bless him.  It certainly was a hard time for all the Islanders.
Good luck with the girls,
cathangirl
