Suspect tha part of the answer is how deep were they planted and have you earthed them up.

Personally from taking the lazy approach - plant let grow dig up with nothing else done - I have found thay are fairly close to the surface so 12-15 inches deep.

The bottom ones will not be deeper than the seed potato you planted, as the new spuds grow from the stems growing off the seed ... if you see what I mean  :D :D

Now that's just what I was going to say!!  ;)

All you need to do is remember how deep you planted them.... Perhaps looking for the seed potato might help? It's the small shrivelled one at the lowest part of the root...

Mind you, if you're like me you will probably yank that up when you pull on the top of the plant when you lift the spuds. (I know what I mean!  )

I sincerely hope they were not yanked up, but carefully lifted!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The original, mushy :(, seed potato should come up when you lift the plant - that will give you a guide to the original depth

I think that's what we mean "carefully lifted" (Yanked up gently like).  ;)

We gently yanked up two plants today (PJs) and had a small bowlful of spuds. Cooking them tomorrow with the children  :D

they were suitably impressed ... best comment, said in all seriousness:

'You can get potatoes for free... d'you reckon people know about this?'

30+ years ago I was surprised to find a group of 11 yr olds who thought all potato came in a packet from a factory ..... they had only heard of "Cadbury's Instant Smash"  ::) It took some thinking power to work out where the raw materials might have come from  :(

Remember the advert slogan: "They peel them with their metal knives!"
Perhaps I am just a lot older than I look?

Who said "No" ???
