Munty has posted on another thread: one potato for every 4 inches of diameter.  Personally, I'd go with fewer, maybe one per 8 inches of diameter.

I have all my potatoes in tubs, was really pleased to see shoots this week as I was beginning to think I had finished them off planting a little early. Can't wait to be able to send the kids out for potatoes from the garden, just a shame we wont be able to supply all our veg this way

Keep them earthed up as they emerge Denise.  Help protect against frosts.

Taties in tubs
I'm gonna put a lot of tubs out this year with a potatoe in each of them as they are only smallish buckets. About the size of a big plantpot for a patio tree or something like that.   I tried unsuccessfully last year this way but thats probably down to me having too much work to do last year, and forgetting about them till it was too late. Plus this time I've got a large supply of manure for my garden. So hopefully not only will I get alot of potatoes from my large bed, but from the tubs too. It's a great way to save/maximise on space.

I put them where you can't grow anything else...right in the middle of a big ivy/bramble bed for instance...spuds are coming up a treat and the ivy/brambles are toast.

Cover the shoots by adding earth.  Repeatedly.  Until your container won't hold any more.  This keeps off any frosts but will also reward you with a heavier crop.

It also stops exposed potatoes from going green. Green potatoes should not be eaten as they contain an alkaloid that can give you a bad stomach ache.

Correct on both counts.  Shoots go up the way, roots go down the way.
