Help Needed Please
« on: May 25, 2009, 08:16 »
Hi, I hope someone can help me please,

Over the past few Months, I've lost 3 Hens to the same thing and I can't work out what it is. The symptoms are the Hens go very lethargic,(they just want to sleep), they go off their food, and seperate themselves from the others. All they seem to do is stand hunched up. Their Combs etc.. are still lovely and red and their poo seems to be runny and a sort of Yellow colour.
Has anybody got any ideas please.
Thankyou in advance.

oh dear smiffy, those symptoms could be anything, maybe you should get your girls to a vet? i know it might seem costly now, but rather live hens than dead ones, someone will be along soon and they may have some better advice.

Hi Smiffy.

I've just looked at the poo pictures http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=17568.0 and there's a yellow one that could be worms or egg peritonitis. Have you tried worming your hens ?
If not, you could try a course of flubenvet or another licensed wormer. As TMG says, the only way to know for sure what's wrong is to go to a vet. Whatever's wrong is obviously going through them all in succession. Maybe cheaper and better for them if you can nip it in the bud.
What are you feeding ?

Hi Rob,
Thanks for your help. I am feeding them the usual, Layers Pellets and Mash, Mixed Corn and I give them some Greens a few times a week. I have Wormed them, but thinking about it, that was about 6 Months ago, I'll shoot out there now and get Worming. I think your both right, looks like a trip to the Vet tomorrow.
Thanks again.

Good luck Smiffy. Let us know how you get on. :)

If you can, might be worth in the long term getting them onto some new ground, or diggin over and putting down some bark chippings.

I've got 1/2 ton of Bark Chippings being delivered tomorrow, so hopefully that will help.

Just of to Worm them now,

Thanks again for your help, I'll keep you informed.
