I've had something on my allotment which seems to have knocked the tops off a few lettuces overnight.  There's no sign of them being eaten, just decapitated.  I try to encourage wildlife on the allotment with a bowl of water nearby and I noticed that that night it had been drunk dry.  No incriminating footprints however.  I know there are definitely hedgehogs and stoats around, as well as various neighbourhood cats and of course bl**dy pigeons.

Hm, cutworms seem possible, I'll have a hunt and see if I can find any.  Thanks for the advice.

how sheltered is your plot?

We have lost 3 or 4 lettuce due to high winds the gusts rock them untill the stems break.

 The lettuces are in a reasonably sheltered spot but the allotment as a whole is quite exposed and we did have a few windy days last week.  I'll see how the rest do over the next week or so.  Thanks for the suggestion.
