« on: April 02, 2007, 22:01 »
Hi, I am new to growing vegetables. So far this season i have planted red onion sets and Marris Peer New potatoes. My question is: When is the time to plant other vegetables? Carrots, Spring Onions, Cucumber,Beetroot, Lettuce, Cabbage? and which ones out of these do i need to start off in cold frames?

A lot depends on whereabouts you live Kizza?  I've put my spuds in today, well most ofhtem. and onoins goig in this week too, I have quite a few things starting off in the greenhouse, but my next things to go straight in the ground will be carrots and parsnips and cabbages.  Must try to remember not to plant too many at once like I did last year!!!!

Successional sowing, they be the magick words!!!!

Hi Kizza,

As far as books go, I would highly recommend the ‘Vegetable and Herb Expert’ by D.G. Hessayon – available, as they say, at all good book shops (but cheaper at Amazon.co.uk – Currently reduced from £7.99 to £4.79 – a bargain !).

I usually manage to plant a few of my crops a few weeks earlier than most due to our sunny disposition here in Bournemouth. All my Potatoes are in, Onion Sets, Shallot’s, Carrots (Early Nantes), the rest will go in a little later on, most of the rest are growing in the greenhouse or waiting to be sown.
