Root Vegetables
« on: September 24, 2008, 09:48 »
This is my first year at growing vegetables.  I have some very healthy growth on my parsnips and carrots.  These are tall, very green and lush, but when I pull these veg up, the roots are really small.  I like baby veg, but these are minature.  Am I pulling the parsnips and carrots too early?  If so, when is the right time?  The parsnips are Gladiator F1 Hybrid and the carrots are Fly Away F1 Hybrid.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi lovemyveg welcome to the forums  :D

It could be the spacings, have you thinned them out all?

I tend to poke my finger down around the tops of carrots and parsnips to see if I can feel how wide they are at the top.

It could also be possible that yes you are just pulling them to early  :D

When did you sow the carrots?

Mine went in around March/April time and I've been harvesting them for a couple of months now. All of them a decent size.

March/April is about the most common time, but according to variety it can be earlier or later.

This is a great site about carrots LINK

As seed at the beginning of May for both the parsnips and the carrots.  I only thinned the carrots out, so maybe this is the problem.  I have just printed off the Allotment growing chart and it could be that I am pulling the parsnips too early.  Thanks for all of your comments and the link, which I will go to now.
