It's all a matter of risk, do you have any signs of foxes in the neighbourhood ?.
If you hens are securely locked in at night then it's probably less of a risk.
We have the odd fox that comes into the garden but to be honest I've had hens for nearly 10 yrs on and off, I've never had one dig under the run or bite through the chicken wire.
But mine are very securely locked up at night, no food or water in the run.
So it's all down to how much risk you wish to take.

And we've kept chickens for the 7 years we have been in this house (plus all the other years elsewhere) and our runs are open topped, stock fencing and chicken wire, and we've never lost a chicken to a fox.

They sometimes kill each other with feather pecking, but nothing else kills them!

We had a fox around about two years ago, though I live in a very built up residential area.  Plenty of local Cats around though....so perhaps rodents will be less of a problem.
I also have a Cat.  The Run as I say, I made sure it was double thickness with the Chicken wire and tightly secured. If I see any of that "proper" wire, I will get it though.
The run is not open though and the doors are bolted.  I even put chicken wire a foot deep below the run around the edges.  I'm also hoping the ventilation around the House will be enough, with the corrugated roofing allowing air flow. Three holes in door too.

Just hope the Hens are happy when I get them!.....at least they will have a better....longer life than they would have done!

Just thought I'd add a photo of the Interior of the Run, with the rubber chippings added and perches too .   Now must wait for my Hens!!
